Professionals who are entering the field of academic advising from teaching positions or other academic and student services areas often wish to expand their knowledge about college student personnel services, including learning theory, student development theory, counseling skill development, career development, and academic advising. Even advisors with terminal degrees or graduate degrees in other areas can benefit from some graduate work in this area. Therefore, the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology, in collaboration with the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), has developed a graduate certificate in academic advising. The 15-credit hour program is consistent with standards and guidelines for academic advising specified by the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) in Student Services. The courses within the certificate program contribute to the student’s understanding and practice of these standards and guidelines, including the areas of mission, program, leadership, organization and management, human resources, financial resources, facilities and equipment, legal responsibilities, equal opportunity and access, campus and community relations, diversity, ethics, and assessment. The courses are delivered exclusively in an on-line format.
