Teaching and Learning Graduate Certificate

The Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning is offered through the Curriculum and Instruction  graduate program. The certificate provides two tracks of graduate-level professional course work in education. The licensure track leads to teacher licensure to address critical statewide and national shortages in the following subjects:

  • Agriculture (Grades 6-12)
  • Art (Grades PK-12)
  • Biology (Grades 6-12)
  • Business (Grades 6-12)
  • Chemistry (Grades 6-12)
  • Earth and Space Sciences (Grades 6-12)
  • English (Grades 6-12)
  • Family and Consumer Sciences (Grades 6-12)
  • Journalism (Grades 6-12)
  • Mathematics (Grades 6-12)
  • Modern Language (Grades PK-12)
  • Music (Grades PK-12)
  • Physical Education and Health (PK-12)
  • Physics (Grades 6-12)
  • Speech and Theatre (Grades 6-12)
  • Social Studies (Grades 6-12)

The licensure track of the certificate program was designed to attract qualified candidates to the profession of teaching. Candidates must have a baccalaureate degree in the subject field where licensure is sought.

The non-licensure track is offered to address global shortages in qualified teachers in ESL/EFL education (Grades PK-16). Candidates must have a baccalaureate degree in education. The non-licensure track is intended for international students through contractual relationships with the College of Education regarding international ESL programs.

This program is a 19-20 credit hour curriculum. The licensure track consists of three carefully articulated “blocks” of course work. While it is not required that the courses within either Block I or Block II be completed concurrently, it is a general expectation that the course work listed for Block I be completed before Block II. All courses in Blocks I and II must, however, be completed before enrolling in the Block III Internship semester. Questions concerning exceptions (or substitutions) within the licensure track should be directed to the Licensure Officer, Di Murphy, dim@k-state.edu.

The non-licensure track consists of two “blocks” of course work. The order in which Block I courses are completed may vary. However, all Block I courses must be completed prior to enrolling in the Block II Internship semester.

Students seeking this certificate must submit a Graduate School application indicating the field of study will be the Teaching and Learning graduate certificate program. This is a separate application from the one for admission into a master’s degree. In addition to the Graduate School application, applicants need to submit the following:

  • An official transcript for the bachelor’s degree and for any subsequent undergraduate and graduate coursework.
  • A statement of objectives explaining the goals and purposes for seeking this graduate certificate.
  • Three letters of recommendation.

English language proficiency


If your native language is not English, the Graduate School requires each applicant to provide a satisfactory test score for TOEFL, IELTS or PTE (see chart below).

An applicant who has received a degree in the last two years from a United States college or university is exempt from this requirement.

The TOEFL is offered several times a year throughout the world by the Educational Testing Service. Accepted TOEFL test scores are from the TOEFL IBT (Internet Based Test) and TOEFL PBT (Paper Based Test). International applicants are advised to take the TOEFL as early as possible to avoid delays in the processing of their applications. Please request your scores to be sent to Kansas State University (K-State TOEFL school code 6334). All scores are valid for two years from the initial test date.

Admission Criteria


Acceptance of students leading to a Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning is contingent on being eligible for admission to the Graduate School and meeting the following specific criteria:

Licensure Track:


  • Represent a teaching field identified as a critical area of need: Agriculture (6-12), Art (PK-12), Biology (6-12), Business (6-12), Chemistry (6-12), Earth & Space Science (6-12), English (6-12), Family & Consumer Sciences (6-12), Journalism (6-12), Mathematics (6-12), Music (PK-12), Physics (6-12), and Speech and Theatre (6-12)
  • Meet all undergraduate content requirements (or equivalent) for subject in which licensure is sought (most subject areas require additional content hours);
  • Possess a baccalaureate (or equivalent) in the subject area in which licensure is sought;
  • Receive the support, through personal interview, of at least one member of the faculty sponsoring the Graduate Certificate;
  • Have documented experiences working with youth.

Prior to application, you must first meet with Licensing Officer Di Murphy to determine your eligibility for the certificate and your faculty content advisor.

Official application to the certificate occurs when you begin the completion of any required undergraduate coursework, and have met with Di Murphy and your faculty content advisor.

Non-Licensure Track:


  • Represent the field of ESL/EFL education (Grades PK-16).
  • Possess a baccalaureate (or equivalent) in education.
  • Receive the support, through personal interview, of at least one member of the faculty sponsoring the Graduate Certificate.

Prior to application, you must first meet with your faculty content advisor.

Official application to the certificate occurs when you begin the completion of required coursework and have met with your faculty content advisor.

Application


Students seeking this certificate must submit a Graduate School application indicating the field of study will be the Teaching and Learning graduate certificate program. This is a separate application from the one for admission into a master’s degree. In addition to the Graduate School application, applicants need to submit the following:

  • An official transcript for the bachelor’s degree and for any subsequent undergraduate and graduate coursework.
  • A statement of objectives explaining the goals and purposes for seeking this graduate certificate.

Students seeking this certificate and who need financial aid should apply to the Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction (M.S.) program. If your program is Modern Language, Music, or Agriculture, apply for the M.S. in your respective area

Technology Requirement


Upon admission to the Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning, students must purchase an iPad for the duration of their study.
