Adult Learning and Leadership (Ph.D.)

Offered through the Educational Leadership  graduate program, the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Adult Learning and Leadership is a minimum 90-credit hour, post baccalaureate program designed to prepare scholars who are committed to a career with responsibilities and requirements associated with college/university faculty membership, corporate training and leadership and/or interest in the development of knowledge, theory, and research. With the approval of the supervisory committee, up to 30 graduate hours earned as part of the Master’s degree may be used to satisfy the degree requirements.

Admission Requirements


  • Applicants must submit unofficial transcripts documenting their bachelor’s degree, documenting their master’s degree and any other graduate level coursework completed.
  • Professional history and goal statement (between 5 and 10 pages in length, double-spaced)
  • Resume/curriculum vitae

  • Three professional references with name, institution or company, position and email address

Course Requirements


Students who hold a Master’s degree may request transfer of up to 30 hours of that degree toward a Doctoral degree.

Required Academic Core Courses


Students without a master’s degree in adult education must take these courses in addition to the 90 credit hours in the doctoral degree, as determined by the supervisory committee.

Research


Minimum of 15 credit hours from the following list or equivalent as approved by supervisory committee:

Electives


Select electives appropriate to the area of emphasis that satisfy the minimum 90 credit hours for the program. EDACE prefix, additional quantitative/qualitative research courses or other disciplines at K-State and approved by the supervisory committee.

Doctoral Research


Minimum of 12 hours.

Notes


Residency Requirement: Doctoral students must complete two courses in residence on campus. These two courses will be offered in the summer months in an online and 1-week on-campus intensive format.

Preliminary Exam: The dissertation proposal is the preliminary exam.  The written portion is the first three chapters of the dissertation, and the oral defense is conducted at the proposal meeting with the supervisory committee.

Dissertation Requirements: After successfully completing the comprehensive exam, students must enroll in 1 credit hours of dissertation per semester, excluding summer semester, until the dissertation is complete. After minimum number of doctoral research hours listed on program of study are completed, a student must enroll in 1 hour per semester, excluding summer semester, until the dissertation is completed.
