Simple Requirements
The School of Human Sciences participates in the Ph.D. degree program awarded from the College of Health and Human Sciences with a specialization in Couple and Family Therapy. The mission of the doctoral (PhD) program in Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) at K-State is to educate and mentor family scientist-practitioners with the most advanced, cutting-edge training in research, supervision, and clinical work, for the purpose of developing professionals who embrace a wide range of perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences; and are prepared to make significant contributions as world-class researchers, impactful educators, excellent clinicians and supervisors, and collaborative community leaders. The Ph.D. specialization in couple and family therapy is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE).

This curriculum for the Ph.D. in CFT follows COAMFTE guidelines. It assumes students have completed the requirements for the COAMFTE Master’s-Level Standard Curriculum. Where that is not the case, students must complete the equivalent of any deficiencies. Most students complete the program in four years. Students have seven years to complete the program. A minimum of 90 credits is required. Students already holding an applicable master’s degree upon admission can count 30 credits toward the 90 credits required for the doctorate.
No GRE requirement for admission.

*Students who hold a master’s degree may request transfer of up to 30 credit hours of that degree toward a Doctoral Degree.
The Ph.D. in Health and Human Sciences with specialization in Hospitality Administration is offered through the Hospitality Management graduate program. A master’s degree from an accredited institution is a requirement for admission and represents 30 credits toward the 90 credits required for the doctorate. Regular admission requires a grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in a master’s degree program.
A background in hospitality and business, either experience or coursework, is suggested for successful completion of the program. Students without an educational background in these areas might consider remedial coursework to ensure success.
One year of full-time (or 2,000 hours, if not full-time) experience in some aspect of the hospitality industry is required. Management experience is preferred.

The Ph.D. requires at least 90 semester credit hours beyond the bachelor’s degree, including 15 credit hours of dissertation research. The number of hours from a previously completed master’s degree which may be counted toward the 90-hour requirement is decided by the student’s supervisory committee and the Graduate School. A maximum of 30 hours may be transferred from a completed master’s degree. A maximum of nine credit hours can be transferred from graduate work completed after the master’s degree at another accredited university. Doctoral students are required to pass both written and oral preliminary examinations prior to admission to candidacy.

The Department of Kinesiology participates in the Ph.D. program in the College of Health and Human Sciences with a specialization in Kinesiology. Students are prepared to conduct research in exercise physiology or exercise behavioral science.
The Ph.D. requires a minimum of 90 semester credit hours beyond the bachelor’s degree, including 30 credit hours of dissertation research. The School of Human Sciences participates in the Ph.D. degree program awarded from the College of Health and Human Sciences with a specialization in Prevention Science in HDFS. The PhD program in Prevention Science in HDFS provides students with the skills to teach, conduct research, and practice in the field. Graduates will be prepared to conduct high-impact research addressing issues and needs relevant to individual, family and relationship health and well-being across the life course. Such research findings inform public policy, program development, and build the evidence base.

The Fashion Studies program participates in the Ph.D. degree program awarded from the College of Health and Human Sciences with a specialization in Sustainable Fashion Business. The degree is designed to enable students to combine knowledge of fashion with an understanding of its application to a broader human perspective. A program of study will be individually planned to capitalize on the interests, goals, and disciplinary backgrounds of the student and faculty. A preliminary written examination and oral defense are required upon completing two-thirds of the program of study. A dissertation and oral defense of the dissertation are required.
The PhD requires a minimum of 90 semester credit hours beyond the bachelor’s degree – including 60 hours of coursework and 30 hours of dissertation research.
A master’s degree is a requirement for admission and represents 30 credits toward the 90 credits required for the doctorate.
