Imagine. Investigate. Communicate.

Become well-read, well-connected, and well-prepared with a B.A. in English.

Students in English learn how to think critically, reason carefully, communicate effectively, and appreciate excellent writing and thinking. The degree in English prepares students for a vast range of careers with financial, intellectual, personal, and social rewards. A degree in English also prepares students to change careers throughout life.

Double majors and teacher licensure.

The B.A. in English pairs well with degrees across the university.

Students majoring in English may also prepare for teacher licensure in Secondary Education- Language Arts Teacher Licensure program. In addition to the adjustment allowed for all double majors, students in this program may be able to count some of their Education requirements towards restricted electives. They should select their courses in consultation with advisors in both the English department and the College of Education to ensure that they meet the requirements of both programs. See the Department of Curriculum and Instruction for licensure requirements.

Degree requirements.

Students select courses from six areas: Foundations (6 credit hours), The Craft of Writing (3 credit hours), Historical and Cultural Contexts (9 credit hours), Multicultural and Global Literatures (6 credit hours), and Experiential Learning and Professional Development (1-3 credit hours). For a final area, Concentration and Additional Electives, students select 9 credit hours for a concentration in a particular area of interest, such as courses in creative writing or courses required for Teaching Licensure.

While completing the requirements, students must take at least 3 credit hours of pre-1800 literature and 3 credit hours of post-1800 literature, and they must select three 3-credit hour courses at 600-700 level. One 3-credit hour course at the 200-level may be selected for the area titled Concentration and Additional Electives. Students must achieve a C or better in all courses taken for major or minor credit.
