Endorsement for certification or licensure requiring work beyond the bachelor’s degree

The College of Education  will recommend for licensure individuals satisfying program requirements for the following: building leader (administrator), district leader (administrator), school counselor, reading specialist, early childhood unified education, and English as a second language (ESL). Licensure recommendations are initiated through the Office of Licensure, 13 Bluemont Hall.

Administrative leadership endorsements


A graduate degree is required for any professional administrative leadership license granted by the state of Kansas. The program required by the College of Education must be completed. A minimum of eight hours from courses required for the administrative leadership license must be earned at K-State before the College of Education may recommend administrative leadership licensure. The educational leadership faculty should be contacted regarding advisement for specific administrative leadership licensure.

There are two Kansas administrative leadership endorsements: the building leadership endorsement for the principalship and the district leadership endorsement for the superintendency, which also covers other positions such as special education director (see special education, below).

Building administrative leadership endorsement


This endorsement is for licensure for the principalship. It includes 36 hours of course work. Many courses required for this endorsement are the same as those required in the M.S. in educational leadership. Students who already have applicable course work from another graduate degree do not need a second degree in order to qualify for the license. Endorsement requirements are listed here.

Professional Building Leadership License***


* All initial building leadership license candidates must complete the School Leaders Licensure Assessment through ETS (www.ets.org) and meet a minimum score of 165.

** Students are required to document a minimum of 150 clock hours guided field experience through the formal practicum and other coursework (i.e. additional practicum requirements are imbedded in many courses in the licensure sequence to assist in reaching the 150 clock hour requirement). A written log of practicum activities must be included with the student’s final portfolio assessment. Further, see policy on acceptable internship settings.

*** After receiving an initial license, students must complete a one-year supervised internship in an administrative position to earn the professional license.

 

District administrative leadership endorsement


This endorsement is for licensure for the superintendency. It includes 60 total hours of graduate course work. Much of this same work is also required for building-level leadership licensure. Accordingly, students who already hold a master’s degree in educational leadership may apply those degree hours toward this license. The course work for this endorsement is listed below:

Initial District Leadership License (60 total required hours)


Prerequisite to Pursuit of District Leadership License (36* hours)


  • Candidates for the initial district leadership license must have a masters degree from an accredited university.
  • Candidates must hold a current Kansas building administrative leadership license OR have satisfied the requirements for the Initial Building Leadership License.
  • Candidates must have completed the School Superintendent Assessment (through ETS www.ets.org) with a score of 157 or above.

Professional District Leadership License****


* Candidates holding degrees from other universities may be required to take additional coursework to total 60 hours beyond the bachelor’s degree.

** If the candidate obtained building licensure through Kansas State University and his/her transcript shows completion of EDADL 886 Ethical Dimensions of Leadership during the building license program, this requirement has been satisfied. Otherwise, the requirement applies.

School counseling endorsements


(The official title of this degree approved by the Board of Regents is M.S. in Counseling and Student Development.)

The Master of Science Degree in School Counseling is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Students who complete the 48-hour program are eligible for school counseling licensure. There are two options for licensure as a school counselor in the State of Kansas. One option is for individuals who have a professional teaching license; the second option, the parallel pathway, is for individuals who do not have a professional teaching license. The parallel pathway option requires additional field experiences over two semesters in schools.

Reading Specialist Endorsement (18 hours)


Special licensure requirements exist for K-12 school teachers of special reading classes in Kansas. In addition to degree certification and teaching experience, a planned sequence of graduate reading courses are required for licensure endorsement. Students seeking this endorsement must hold a valid Kansas Professional teaching license.

Required Practicum (3 hours)


Additional Requirements


After completing the required courses and practicum, the applicant must fulfill these additional requirements to obtain a conditional reading specialist license:

  1. Hold a valid professional teaching license.
  2. Present a score of 560 or above on the Praxis II exam for the Reading Specialist (test number 0300).
  3. Hold a masters degree. (It is permitted but not necessary to include the required courses as part of the masters degree.)

Special education endorsements


Endorsements can be in one or more of the following areas: adaptive or functional special education. The endorsement programs for adaptive or functional special education may lead to a master’s degree. Specific requirements for these endorsement areas are included in the description for the M.S. in special education. At least half of the credits required for special education endorsement must be earned at K-State, including at least one major course and one practicum, before the College of Education may recommend for special education endorsement.

The special education endorsement can be granted to a person who holds a valid Kansas teaching license for the level (i.e., elementary, or secondary) of special education preparation. Contact the department of special education, counseling and student affairs for information about provisional endorsement.

Teaching endorsement for adaptive special education elementary and/or secondary


Prerequisites


Eligible for licensure in elementary or secondary education, and one of the following courses:

English as second language (ESL) endorsement


Completion of the following five courses meets requirements for ESL endorsement through Kansas State University. Students enroll in one course per semester; each is offered for three hours of graduate or undergraduate credit. The courses in the endorsement are:
