Drawing on the interdisciplinary scholarly and pedagogical traditions of the fields of ethnic studies and gender, women, and sexuality studies, Social Transformation Studies offers students a base of knowledge and skills that will enable them to launch and sustain careers devoted to tackling some of the most pressing social issues facing Kansans, and Americans more broadly, including health disparities, food insecurity, gender violence, and racial and economic inequalities.

Social Transformation Studies offers students the opportunity to think critically about the multifaceted realities, identities, and important knowledges created by diverse peoples; develop cultural competencies that can be used in workplace settings; learn about and promote practices of inclusivity; and foster community-based engaged research and praxis responsive to the needs and realities of underserved communities.

A major in Social Transformation Studies equips students to approach issues of equity and civic engagement from a variety of perspectives and prepare them to excel in a wide range of fields, including violence prevention and advocacy, law and policy studies, health professions, the technology sector, business, and public health, as well as graduate-level studies.  The Social Transformation Studies program provides students with skills that employers seek: innovation skills to create new solutions to both emerging and enduring social problems, the ability to work with and serve diverse and underserved constituencies, and critical thinking, writing and communication.

In addition to the general university and college requirements for the BA/BS degree, all Social Transformation Studies majors are required to complete 30 credit hours.  All STRAN majors will complete one 3 credit introductory course (AMETH 160   or GWSS 105  ), 9 credits of core courses (STRAN 400  , STRAN 550  , and STRAN 600  ), and 3 cr. of elective in either AMETH or GWSS.  For the remaining 15 credits of the Social Transformation Studies major, students will choose one of two tracks: American Ethnic Studies or Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies.

The department offers an undergraduate major, minors in American Ethnic Studies, Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, and Queer Studies, a certificate in Intercultural Competence, and a graduate certificate in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies.
