The Department of Interior Design and Fashion Studies encompasses disciplines that study the interaction of humans and their environment. Faculty members specialize in interior design, fashion business, fashion design, and product development. The department aspires to change the world through a focus on the human ecological framework in teaching, scholarship, and service in our disciplines. We have a shared concern for sustainability and hope that through our teaching and scholarship we will improve the human condition and be part of the solution to the ecological problems we face.
We are committed to excellence in scholarship in its diverse forms including discovery, integration, application, and teaching. The faculty members value the potential of their students and commit their effort to enhancing student lives and the quality of all human life through their scholarship and the life-long impacts of our graduates.
Undergraduate programs lead to a bachelor of science in interior design or a bachelor of science in fashion studies. Resident graduate programs lead to a master of science in apparel and textiles or a doctoral degree in human ecology with specialization in apparel and textiles. IDFS is also a member of the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (GP-IDEA) offering an online graduate degree in merchandising. For more information see the website.
Students in all programs are encouraged to take advantage of diverse learning experiences including internships, study abroad, field trips, and study tours. Interior design students have the opportunity to join professional and student interest groups including the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), the International Interior Design Association (IIDA).
The interior design and fashion design programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The interior design program also is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the fashion studies program is accredited by the Textiles and Apparel Programs Accreditation Commission (TAPAC). The interior design program at Kansas State University is highly regarded by employers for the quality of education it provides and is consistently ranked among the best programs in the U.S. by DesignIntelligence. Both the fashion business and fashion design specializations are consistently ranked by Fashionschools.org among the best programs in the Midwest and within the top 25% of all similar programs nationwide.
Facilities include well-equipped studios and laboratories for: interior design, fashion design and production, and textile analysis. The textile laboratories include a wide range of textile and product testing equipment, and extensive equipment for natural dye research. The department is home to the Kansas State University Historic Costume and Textile Museum with an extensive collection of artifacts available for research and public education through exhibition.
