All regular courses offered by the Department of Modern Languages may be taken by non-majors on an A/Pass/F basis, subject to the provisions of the university policy.
Students majoring in languages should enroll for the bachelor of arts degree.
Programs Offered
Modern Languages offers a major in Modern Languages with concentrations in FRENCH, GERMAN, or SPANISH. Students may combine their Modern Language majors with a major in a different field or college. To accomplish this, students need to complete the requirements for a BA in Modern Languages as well as those for the other major or degree. We also encourage students to consider secondary majors in International Studies, or a minor in Chinese Studies, Classical Studies, French, German, Japanese Studies, Spanish or Spanish Translation to complement their curriculum.
Kirmser Language Center (KLC)
001 Eisenhower Hall
Making learning enjoyable! If you are a faculty member or a student enrolled in a language course, come on in! You are invited to the Kirmser Language Center. We will provide you audio, video, and computer multimedia services for both undergraduate and graduate level courses within the Department of Modern Languages. The KLC currently services between 800-1000 students each semester and offers a variety of resources.
Placement and Retroactive Credit
Entering students who have had previous language experience and who plan to continue language study are strongly encouraged to take a language placement survey before or at the beginning of the first semester of language study. If there is any doubt as to proper placement, check with Modern Languages advisors at mlangadvising@k-state.edu.
Students wishing to acquire retroactive credit for language proficiency gained before coming to K-State should consult with Modern Languages advisors at mlangadvising@k-state.edu.
Financial aid
The department offers scholarships to undergraduate majors and minors for study at K-State or in study abroad programs. For details, contact the head of the Department of Modern Languages.
Programs abroad
The department sponsors annual or biannual faculty-led summer study programs in Germany, Japan, Mexico, and Spain. All inquiries should be addressed to the head of the department.
In addition, students may explore additional faculty-led and non-faculty-led study abroad programs facilitated through the Office of Education Abroad.
