Kinesiology is the study of physical activity across a range of tasks including exercise, daily living, play, sport, and work. Physical activity is vital to preventing chronic diseases and premature death, and it enhances one’s quality of life.
Kinesiology promotes an understanding of the necessity and application of physical activities to optimal health. Coursework integrates biological science and social and behavioral science approaches using biomechanical, physiological, psychological and sociological perspectives.
The Integrative Physiology degree is designed specifically to provide the scientific foundation for students interested in a health career. The core curriculum for the Integrative Physiology degree is concentrated upon systems physiology (cardiovascular, cardiopulmonary, neural control, skeletal muscle, etc.) and how these systems interact with each other in health and disease. Systems physiology has consistently served as the foundation for health professional preparation and improving our knowledge of human and animal function.
Public Health is the “science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private communities, and individuals.” Taking a population health approach, the public health degree promotes an understanding of the individual and societal structures that shape health. The core curriculum of the public health degree prepares students with a strong foundation for careers in public health and other health-related fields.
Kansas State University’s international reputation in exercise physiology exercise behavioral science, and public health physical acitvityactivity provides students the opportunity to pursue exercise-related careers after graduation or seek admission to advanced education through health professional and graduate school.
More than 50 percent of K-State Kinesiology graduates each year are admitted to physical therapy, physician assistant, public health, medicine, chiropractic and other health-related advanced graduate degree programs. In addition, several outstanding students are admitted during their junior year at K-State for a combined Bachelor of Science-Master of Science degree or a combined Bachelor of Science-Master of Public Health degree.
Graduates with degrees from the kinesiology department (Kinesiology, Integrative Physiology and Public Health) have been very successful in gaining admission to health professional and graduate school or pursuing physical activity related careers after graduation.
Kinesiology majors must take a minimum of 39 kinesiology hours that include 18 hours from the lower-level core, and 21 hours from the upper level core with a requirement of one of the physiology course options, one of the exercise behavioral science course options, and 15 credit hours of 300 level or above Kinesiology courses, with at least 3 of the 15 elective hours being a 600 or higher level course.
Integrative Physiology majors take a minimum of 39 Kinesiology hours and human nutrition including 18 hours from the lower-level core, 12 hours from the foundational integrative physiology core, 6 hours from the integrative physiology electives and one kinesiology elective.
Public Health majors take a minimum of 52 professional hours in the degree with 40 credit hours coming from the public health professional courses and 12 credit hours of public health electives.
A minimum grade of C and GPA of 2.2 are required for all kinesiology courses meeting degree requirements.
