The graduate therapeutic horticulture certificate is a program designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to evaluate, design and implement activities and spaces for their therapeutic value related to interactions with plants. Therapeutic horticulture is a method in which a trained professional leads participants through activities connecting people with aspects of horticulture to support well-being or other specified goals. Activities are intentionally designed for active or passive involvement with plant material typically targeting vocational, social, psychological, physical health outcomes. Therapeutic horticulture is a practice that is often incorporated as a resource to support professionals in fields of education, psychology, occupational therapy, mental health and elder care among many others. It is commonly used in settings such as primary and secondary classrooms, correctional facilities, residential and community centers botanic gardens, veteran’s facilities, hospice care centers and substance abuse and treatment centers.
This certificate may connect with one or more master degree programs. At the recommendation of the academic program, students may apply credits earned through this graduate certificate completion towards a graduate program at Kansas State University, provided that all Graduate School policies are fulfilled.
