Admission Requirements


The Ph.D. in Health and Human Sciences with specialization in Hospitality Administration is offered through the Hospitality Management graduate program. A master’s degree from an accredited institution is a requirement for admission and represents 30 credits toward the 90 credits required for the doctorate. Regular admission requires a grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in a master’s degree program.

A background in hospitality and business, either experience or coursework, is suggested for successful completion of the program. Students without an educational background in these areas might consider remedial coursework to ensure success.

One year of full-time (or 2,000 hours, if not full-time) experience in some aspect of the hospitality industry is required. Management experience is preferred.

Required application materials include:

  • Official transcript of all completed academic work
  • Recommendation letter: Applicants will be able to designate three individuals for letters of recommendation online. Enter the contact information of each reference online, and the system will request the letters of recommendation. Recommenders will upload their letters directly to your application using the links provided.
  • A resume or CV
  • Academic Statement of Purpose
  • GRE or GMAT scores: All applicants are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).
  • Affidavit of Financial Support (International student only): This documentation is required in order to issue an I-20 OR DS-2019 and has no bearing on the admission decision
  •  English proficiency test scores are required if English is not your native language (your country of birth).

Course Requirements


The Ph.D. requires at least 90 semester credit hours beyond the bachelor’s degree, including 15 credit hours of dissertation research. The number of hours from a previously completed master’s degree which may be counted toward the 90-hour requirement is decided by the student’s supervisory committee and the Graduate School. A maximum of 30 hours may be transferred from a completed master’s degree. A maximum of nine credit hours can be transferred from graduate work completed after the master’s degree at another accredited university. Doctoral students are required to pass both written and oral preliminary examinations prior to admission to candidacy.
