Computer Science (MS)

The M.S. degree in Computer Science requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of graduate level course work. The degree program can take one of three forms: a report option requiring 30 hours including 2 credit hours of report and 1 credit hour of seminar; a thesis option requiring 30 hours including 6 credit hours of research; and a non-thesis/report option requiring 30 hours of computer science classes. An oral presentation is required for each option and original research is required for the thesis option.

Course Requirements
A culminating experience is required. The graduate student works with the major professor and the supervisory committee to determine the parameters of the culminating experience. An MS candidate must either 1) defend a thesis (6 credit hours), 2) defend a report (3 credit hours), or 3) graduate on coursework only in which case an exit interview is required as the culminating experience. The student must receive a grade of B or better for all classes assigned by the Graduate Studies Committee and for each course used to satisfy the following requirements. Course work must include a course from each of the following areas:
Implementation:
Every student must successfully complete a significant implementation under the guidance of a faculty member. This will usually be done as a part of CIS 641 , CIS 690 , CIS 706 , CIS 722 , CIS 736 , CIS 801 . The effort must be certified by a faculty member and the student must request this in writing at the beginning of the course. Specialization:
Any course numbered CIS 800 or higher except seminar, projects, and research courses. No course may be used to satisfy more than one requirement. Total Hours Required for Master’s: 30
