The School of Human Sciences offers a Master of Science degree in Human Development and Family Science with a specialization in couple and family therapy. The couple and family therapy M.S. specialization prepares professionals to conduct and evaluate therapy with couple and family groups. Students pursue programs of study that include course work in human development, family studies, couple and family therapy, and research methods. The M.S. specialization in couple and family therapy is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education.

Admission Requirements


Course Requirements


The M.S. degree in Couple and Family Therapy requires 60 semester hours of graduate work. Most students complete the program in three years. Students have up to five years to complete the program.

The coursework only option for this program does not require a culminating experience.

Elective Courses


Students who choose to complete the clinical project (See below) are required to complete 3 elective credit hours.

Thesis Option Courses


  1. Pass a comprehensive written examination on couple and family therapy
  2. Complete, with committee approval, a thesis (requiring 6 hours of CFT 899 )
  3. Pass an oral examination with emphasis on the written document

Clinical Project Option


  1. Pass a comprehensive written examination on couple and family therapy
  2. Complete, with committee approval, a Clinical Project (requiring 3 hours of CFT 889  plus 3 elective credit hours)
  3. Pass an oral examination with emphasis on the written document
