The PhD program in Microbiology trains students to be independent, rigorous and creative microbiologists in preparation for careers in research, teaching, industry and government. Most Microbiology PhD students will graduate in 5 years and publish 2-5 papers.

Admission Requirements
The Microbiology Ph.D. degree, offered through the Biology graduate program, requires a minimum of 24-30 hrs course work, including 15 hours of courses at the 800 level. Students already holding an applicable master’s degree upon admission can count 30 credits toward the 90 credits required for the doctorate. Course selection is done in consultation and approval of the student’s supervisory committee and should include the following.

Master’s degree Transfer Credits: 30
*Students who hold a master’s degree may request transfer of up to 30 credit hours of that degree toward a Doctoral Degree Total Credits Required for Doctorate: 90
