The Curriculum and Instruction Ed.D. program is directed by a minimum of five members of the university graduate faculty, including a major professor with substantial expertise in the area of emphasis, two other faculty members with strengths in the area of emphasis, one faculty member outside the student’s specialization. Each student’s program of study is individualized with the approval of the major professor and the supervisory committee to optimize the student’s interests, expertise, and professional goals. Information on the Ed.D. programs may be obtained from the Curriculum and Instruction Graduate Program Director.

Admission Requirements
All students are required to meet the general university admission requirements. - Undergraduate and graduate degree from a recognized and accredited institution
- If you are applying to the Ed.D., you must also meet the following requirements:
- U.S. applicants must be currently employed as a teacher or administrator and remain under contract with an institution for the duration of the program.
- International applicants must be currently employed as educators within their national system. Must have at least three years of teaching experience.
A master’s degree is a requirement for admission and represents 30 credits toward the 90 credits required for the doctorate. Dissertation Requirements
Completion of a dissertation which treats an important topic of professional education practice using a systematic methodology consistent with accepted research paradigms; the dissertation must be successfully defended in a public, oral defense. Prerequisite
An introductory survey to research methods and methodologies in the social sciences. The course may be included on the Program of Study. Possible courses: EDCEP 816 Research Methods in Education or a course approved by the supervisory committee. Area of emphasis: 48 credit hours
Introductory Courses: 6 credit hours
Analysis and Interpretation of Educational Research: A Theory Course: 3 credit hours
Possible course includes: Courses with EDCI prefix: 12 credit hours
A minimum of 12 credit hours of the post-master’s credits on the Ed.D. Program of Study must designate the EDCI prefix at the 800 or 900 course level. Research credits (EDCI 999 ) and internship credits (EDCI 991 ) may not be applied to the 12 credit hour minimum. Courses in the major and minor area: 27 credit hours
Foundational Knowledge: 12 credit hours
Possible courses for 1-4 below include: History and Philosophy of Educational Ideas and Practice: 3 credit hours
Education in a Diverse Society: 3 credit hours
Supporting Positive Change through Educational Technology: 3 credit hours
Curriculum: 3 credit hours
ELD Track: 9 credit hours
Applies to EFL track only; all 9 hours of EFL courses listed are required for EFL track Or, Foundational Knowledge courses approved by the supervisory committee. Research courses: 12 credit hours
Research courses addressing methodology consistent with that required for the dissertation and approved by the supervisory committee.
Possible courses include: Clinical Experience: 12 credit hours
Preliminary examination
Satisfactory completion of all segments of a written examination of at least 12 hours over all areas of the program of study. Program Total Credits: 64
Master’s degree Transfer Credits: 30
*Students who hold a master’s degree may request transfer of up to 30 credit hours of that degree toward a Doctoral Degree Total Credit Hours Required for Doctorate: 94
