This certificate is offered through the Special Education, Counseling, and Student Affairs  graduate program in collaboration with NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising, and is available through distance education only.  The 15-credit hour program is consistent with standards and guidelines for academic advising programs specified by the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS). The courses within the certificate program contribute to the student’s knowledge about academic advising strategies, approaches, theories of career and student development, and application to college and university settings.The courses are delivered exclusively in an on-line format.

Admission Requirements


Prospective and current students interested in this certificate must submit a Graduate School application indicating the field of study will be the Academic Advising graduate certificate program. This is a separate application from the one for admission into a master’s degree. In addition to the Graduate School application, applicants also submit the following:

  • An official transcript for the bachelor’s degree and for any subsequent undergraduate and graduate coursework with a miniumum 3.0 GPA over the last two years of undergrauate study or in graduate coursework.
  • 1-2 page statement of goals and professional experience that includes the following information:
    • career and professional goals and aspirations, and how being accepted to the program will benefit the goals and aspirations
    • the reason for interest in seeking the graduate certificate
    • evidence of motivation, leadership, and strong work ethic
    • professional experiences that support application
  • Professional resume or curriculum vitae.

Students may apply credits earned through the graduate certificate completion towards a Master of Science in Academic Advising at Kansas State University (which has a separate admissions process). 

Course Requirements


Total Hours Required for Graduate Certificate: 15


Total hours MUST include between 12 and 20 hours of graduate credit: Graduate Handbook, Chapter 4
