English - Literature (BA)

Students select courses from six areas: Foundations (6 credit hours), The Craft of Writing (3 credit hours), Historical and Cultural Contexts (9 credit hours), Multicultural and Global Literatures (6 credit hours), and Experiential Learning and Professional Development (1-3 credit hours). For a final area, Concentration and Additional Electives, students select 9 credit hours for a concentration in a particular area of interest, such as courses in creative writing or courses required for Teaching Licensure.  

While completing the requirements, students must take at least 3 credit hours of pre-1800 literature and 3 credit hours of post-1800 literature, and they must select three 3-credit hour courses at 600-700 level. One 3-credit hour course at the 200-level may be selected for the area titled Concentration and Additional Electives. Students must achieve a C or better in all courses taken for major or minor credit.

K-State Core  is the foundation for an impactful life and career after time at K-State.

The K-State Core framework covers six disciplinary areas: English, Communications, Mathematics & Statistics, Natural & Physical Sciences, Social & Behavioral Sciences, and Arts and Humanities. In addition, a seventh area is reserved for institutionally designated use, which K-State is keeping as free electives. In total, the framework takes up 34-35 credit hours of 100 and 200-level coursework. Students who complete their general education elsewhere cannot be required to take additional general education coursework in the disciplinary areas of the framework without permission from KBOR to continue requiring courses in the K-State Core.

Outside Concentration: 9 Credit Hours


Outside credential of at least 9 credit hours (May be from any unit, except English OR from approved interdisciplinary credentials within the unit).

Any 9 credit hours in a single prefix (except for ENGL) (all must be 300 level or above OR at any level with a prereq in the same prefix; up to 5 credit hours may overlap with program).

OR

Any 9 credit hours in a microcredential (up to 5 credit hours may overlap with program).

If not met through K-State Core requirements, MATH 160 is required.

Foundations: 6 credit hours


Students are required to take ENGL 310 and one additional 3 Credit Hour course from the list below.

Courses that count for the Foundations Category introduce students to the practices and methodologies of the study of English literature, language, and culture. Required within this category: ENGL 310.

The Craft of Writing: 3 Credit Hours


Courses that count for the Craft of Writing Category will be at the 300-level or above and demonstrate a focus on the praxis of writing as a process for specific audiences and purposes, with multiple drafts and opportunities for revision. Choose one course from the following



Historical & Cultural Contexts: 9 Credit Hours


Must take one Pre-1800 course, one Post-1800 course, and one course of the student’s choosing from the following:

Multicultural & Global Literatures: 6 Credit Hours


Courses that count for the Multicultural & Global Literatures Category will be at the 300-level and above and demonstrate a central focus on U.S. ethnic minority and/or non-Western authors, experiences, and perspectives. Choose two courses from the below.

Experiential Learning & Professional Development: 1-3 Credit Hours


Courses that count for the Experiential Learning & Professional Development Category will demonstrate an experiential learning component in the field of English and related disciplines. Choose one from the below

ENGL courses at the 220-799 levels not already selected from the list above.

Not additional courses; an advanced level check of completion of 600 level and above.

May be fulfilled through ENGL courses in K-State Core, free electives, or program requirements.

BA Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Requirement: 6 Credit Hours


3 credit hours in each of the following, with at least 3 credit hours at 300 level or above OR at any level with a prerequisite in the same discipline.

One Non-Quantitative Social Science; Any Social course that does NOT have a MATH or STAT prereq Credits: 3


BA Natural and Quantitative Requirement: 6 Credit Hours


One course in each of the following, with at least 3 credit hours total at 300 level or above OR at any level with a prerequisite in the same discipline.

Natural Science or Quantitative course Credits: 3


Natural Science, or Quantitative, or Social Science with MATH or STAT Credits: 3


BA Second Language Requirement: 3-16 Credit Hours


Choose one of the following:

Option 1: 3-14 Credit Hours


At least 3 credit hours of coursework culminating with level 4 or above (i.e., Frech 4, German 4, Spanish 4, etc.) or the equivalent of level 4 in a second language sequence.

Option 2: 16 Credit Hours


At least 16 credit hours of coursework in which student takes the first and second levels of two different languages, selected from any language offered within the department of Modern Languages, ASL, or from any other second language transferred in at an equivalent level.

Option 3: 3 Credit Hours


Students whose first language is not English may satisfy this requirement by meeting the English Proficiency Admission Standards for K-State or by completing the appropriate level of exit courses with the English Language Program.

Free Electives: 20-37 Credit Hours


In addition to K-State Core Free Electives requirement, take any course so that the total credit hours completed equals 120.
