The German program with Distinction in the Department of Modern Languages develops the skills and perspectives of culturally and linguistically competent citizens who are poised to live and work in an increasingly global and diverse society, in accordance with Kansas State University’s land-grant mission. The program offers an interdisciplinary, holistic, and balanced preparation that balances language study with cultural and literary studies and helps students build advanced level proficiency in the language. Students will build skills in effective communication, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and research in applied courses that prioritize interaction in the language. Our undergraduate majors typically pursue coursework in the language, building on a solid foundation to pursue advanced opportunities in translation studies, literary and cultural studies, film and media studies, languages for professional purposes (business and health), and applied linguistics (including bilingualism, second language acquisition and pedagogy). The program, while structured to ensure success at each level, is designed to ensure flexibility to help learners personalize and individualize their path. Graduates pursue careers in education, translation and interpretation, law, international business, and healthcare.
