Medical Laboratory Science (BS)

The Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) curriculum requires 90 credit hours (basic requirements and major requirements) at K-State and the completion of 30 hours (one year) of clinical training at one of two affiliated hospitals in Kansas City: North Kansas City Hospital or Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City. Both sites are NAACLS accredited. Admission into the clinical portion of the training is competitive and acceptance is not guaranteed. After completion of all the requirements for the bachelor’s degree in MLS, students are eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC), which is the gold standard in certification for MLS professionals. 

Students are expected to have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 in both overall coursework and the required science courses. Students majoring in Medical Lab Science must earn grades of C or better in all courses required for the major in the areas of Program Concentration Requirements, including transfer work applied to these areas.

Foundational Requirements


Complete the following requirements associated with the primary disciplines for Medical Lab Science:

  • Math - 3 hours - MATH 100, MATH 150, MATH 205, or MATH 220
  • Statistics - 3 hours - STAT 225, STAT 240, or STAT 250
  • Biology - 24 hours - BIOL 198, BIOL 450, BIOL 255, BIOL 670 and either BIOL 441 & BIOL 442 OR KIN 360
  • Chemistry - CHM 210 and CHM 230; CHM 351 and CHM 351 OR CHM 531 and CHM 532; BIOCH 521
  • MLS Elective - 3 hours - BIOL 530, BIOL 541 (preferred), BIOL 545, BIOL 609, BIOL 703, or PHYS 113

Clinical Requirements


30 hours from an affiliated MLS hospital training program. Hours are taken as 12 credits during fall/spring and 6 over a summer. 

BS Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Requirements: (6 credit hours)


3 credit hours in each of the following, with at least 3 credit hours total at 300 level or above OR at any level with a prerequisite in the same discipline.

Fine Arts or Humanities: Any course or combination of courses: (3 credit hours)


Non-Quantitative Social Science: Any social science course that does NOT have a MATH or STAT prereq: 3 credit hours)


Free Electives: (0-44 credit hours)


In addition to K-State Core Free Electives requirement, take any course so that the total credit hours completed equals 120.
