Communication Sciences and Disorders (BS)

The goal of the communication sciences and disorders major is to educate professionals who are competent to help children and adults with communicative problems of speech, hearing, and language. The undergraduate program provides the foundation for the MS program, which is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation, and meets the current requirements in speech language pathology for the Certificate of Clinical Competence of the American Speech–Language-Hearing Association. Determination of the student’s program of study and the completion of all requirements for certification are the responsibility of the student and the advisor. 
 
 
Enrollment in the following specified professional courses requires CSD major, completion of 57 credit hours, and an overall 3.0 GPA, including both K-State and KSIS-credited transfer coursework. 
 
Students participate in observations of a variety of disorders and age groups in the KSU Speech and Hearing Center. Students may on invitation of the faculty, participate in a supervised direct clinical experience at the KSU Speech and Hearing Center. 
 
 
Bachelor’s degree requirements 

Kansas State University Core: 34-36 Credit Hours


K-State Core  is the foundation for an impactful life and career after time at K-State.

The K-State Core framework covers six disciplinary areas: English, Communications, Mathematics & Statistics, Natural & Physical Sciences, Social & Behavioral Sciences, and Arts and Humanities. In addition, a seventh area is reserved for institutionally designated use, which K-State is keeping as free electives. In total, the framework takes up 34-35 credit hours of 100 and 200-level coursework. Students who complete their general education elsewhere cannot be required to take additional general education coursework in the disciplinary areas of the framework without permission from KBOR to continue requiring courses in the K-State Core.

Program Requirements: 84 credit hours

Major Support Courses: 16 credit hours


* Required if not met through K-State Core requirements.

If not met through K-State Core requirements, STAT 225 is required.

Professional Electives: 21 credit hours


In consultation with advisor select 21 hours of professional elective credit hours related to academic and professional goals. Students are encouraged to consider minors, certificates, and career track options identified by Communication Sciences and Disorders academic advisor. 

*The courses listed below are common courses taken as professional electives and students may assume will automatically count towards the 21-hour requirement. This list is not exhaustive; students should further consult with their CSD academic advisor to determine what other classes may apply and which courses best fit their individual academic goals and interests.
