The Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering offers an accelerated B.S./M.S. degree program in Mechanical Engineering in which students can earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees with 9 hours of overlapping of coursework. Students can complete the M.S. with a thesis, report, or coursework only option.

Admission Requirements

A student must meet the following requirements and petition Kansas State University’s Graduate School to be admitted into the accelerated program.

  • The student must be seeking a BSME degree in MNE.
  • The student must have completed (or be currently enrolled in) at least 75 credit hours of their undergraduate degree.
  • The student’s cumulative undergraduate GPA must be at least 3.25.
  • The student must have a member of K-State’s Graduate Faculty in the MNE department agree to be their major professor (this professor can be changed in accordance with K-State’s policies.)
  • The student must apply for this program before receiving their BSME degree.

Graduation Requirements

Because there is overlap between undergraduate and graduate study, up to 9 graduate credit hours will satisfy the degree requirements for the undergraduate degree. The 9 graduate credits must be composed of 600- or 700-level courses that can apply to the Master’s degree. Accelerated Master’s students will identify these courses by completing the Accelerated Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Form.

Special Requirements

  • A student must complete 30 graduate credit hours with a graduate GPA of at least 3.0.
  • All graduate courses must be C or better.
  • A student must submit a program of study that lists the courses required to meet the master’s degree requirements. The program of study must be approved by the student’s supervisory committee and be submitted to the graduate school before the end of their second semester of graduate study.
  • For the MSME, at least 18 hours, of the required minimum of 30 hours, must be at the 700 level and above.
  • Once a student applies for this program, they must be continuously enrolled to complete this program. If a student is not enrolled for a fall or spring semester, this student loses the ability to count graduate credit hours toward their undergraduate degree.
  • The graded coursework must include at least one 3 credit hour course in engineering mathematics or applied mathematical analysis. Courses that may be used to meet this requirement are: ME 760 , ME 860 , MATH 632 , MATH 713 , MATH 740 , MATH 745 , MATH 855 , MATH 856 , MATH 864 , MATH 865 , PHYS 801 , PHYS 802 .
  • The MS candidate must satisfy the 75% attendance requirement (0 credit hour) in at least two semesters of ME 800  Graduate Seminar/Research Paper (refer to ME 800  course requirements).

Course Requirements

Courses counted toward both degrees

Students can choose three courses for a total of 9 credits.

Total Hours Required for Master’s: 30
