Return to: Degrees & Certificates Offered
An accelerated B.S./M.S. program provides exceptional undergraduates an opportunity to obtain both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Biochemistry in 5 years. The goal of the program is to develop scientists possessing in-depth knowledge of biochemical methods and analytical techniques who are capable of performing independent study and research. Degree Requirements for the B.S. are as described in the Undergraduate Catalog. Up to 9 hours of credits obtained for the B.S. (Biochemistry I, Biochemistry II, and Molecular Biophysics) may be counted toward the M.S. program and must be taken for graduate credit at graduate tuition levels.

Admission Requirements
Students may apply for the accelerated B.S./M.S. program when they have completed 75 credit hours toward the B.S. degree and have completed at least one semester of organic chemistry. Students may apply during the senior year with special permission from the Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics graduate program director. Students in the Medical Biochemistry track will need to take Physical Chemistry as part of their coursework.
The application process will be the same as for the traditional M.S. degree except for that completion of the B.S. degree is not required prior to enrollment in the M.S., and the application must include a recommendation from the student’s undergraduate advisor. Minimum standards for regular admission and for retention in the program require a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.0 in required math and science courses. The requirement for the Graduate Record Exam will be waived.
Course Requirements
M.S. courses counted toward both degrees:
Master’s Degree Requirements
Elective Courses
- Upper level Biochemistry, Biology or other appropriate electives as approved by the supervisory committee Credits: 12-14
Thesis Requirements
Must write and defend a Master’s thesis.
Total Hours Required for Master’s (30 credits)
