The Department has an internationally recognized graduate program leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. A wide variety of opportunities for graduate study are offered in several areas of applied and basic research such as integrated pest management, molecular biology, toxicology, ecology, medical-veterinary entomology, and others. Graduates go on to Ph.D. programs, postdoctoral positions, other academic positions, government agencies and non-government organizations, and private industry.

The doctoral degree requires 90 credits beyond the B.S. degree, or at least 60 credit hours beyond an M.S. degree (incorporating a research thesis), including a dissertation of at least 30 credits. Students with an applicable M.S. degree may request transfer of up to 30 hours of that degree toward the 90 hours required for the doctoral degree. See the doctoral degree program requirements in the Graduate Handbook for additional information: https://www.k-state.edu/grad/student-success/graduate-handbook/chapter3.html

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants for graduate study are expected to have a background in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and the physical sciences.
  • An overall 3.0 GPA (B average, 80% or better) is expected.
  • GRE scores are not required but GRE scores can be helpful in the application process, if available.
  • Applicants cannot be admitted to the graduate degree program unless there is a formal commitment by a faculty member to serve as the major advisor.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact the Graduate Program Director or faculty members to express their interest and determine availability of space and funding for a particular research program.

The Program Contact is Evelyn Kennedy (ekennedy@ksu.edu) and the Graduate Program Director is Dr. Gregory Zolnerowich (gregz@ksu.edu).
