The department of Applied Human Sciences offers a Master of Science degree in Family Studies and Human Services with a specialization in couple and family therapy. The couple and family therapy M.S. specialization prepares professionals to conduct and evaluate therapy with couple and family groups. Students pursue programs of study that include course work in human development, family studies, couple and family therapy, and research methods. The M.S. specialization in couple and family therapy is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education.

Requirements

The M.S. degree in Couple and Family Therapy requires 60 semester hours of graduate work. Most students complete the program in three years. Students have up to five years to complete the program.

CFT 879 - Systemic Assessment and Treatment of Psychopathology Credits: 3

Supervised Clinical Practice (12-18 credits)

A minimum of 12 credit hours of Practica (CFT 885); must accumulate 500 client contact hours and 100 hours of supervision.

CFT 885 - Practicum in Couple and Family Therapy Credits: 1-3

Electives (various)

Students who choose to complete the clinical project (See below) are required to complete 3 elective credit hours.

End of Program Requirements (6 credits)

Pass a comprehensive written examination on couple and family therapy
Complete, with committee approval, one of the following written documents:

A Thesis (requiring 6 hours of CFT 899 )
A Clinical Project (requiring 3 hours of CFT 889 plus 3 elective credit hours)

Pass an oral examination with emphasis on the written document
