Educational Leadership (Ed.D.)

Offered by the Educational Leadership  graduate program, the Doctor of Education in educational leadership is a professional degree program principally for preparing skilled practitioners. Students who do not already hold a district-level (superintendent) endorsement may tailor course work in their emphasis area to meet that license requirement. Contact the Educational Leadership program for current district license requirements. The student’s Ed.D. program is directed by a minimum of four members of the university graduate faculty, including a major professor with substantial expertise in the area of emphasis, two other faculty members with strengths in the area of emphasis, one faculty member outside the student’s specialization. Each student’s program of study is individualized with the approval of the major professor and the supervisory committee to optimize the student’s interests, expertise, and goals.

Admission Requirements


  • Applicants must submit unofficial transcripts documenting their bachelor’s degree, documenting their master’s degree and any other graduate level coursework completed.  
  • Professional history and goal statement (1-2 page statement that includes the following information:
  • Career and professional goals and aspirations, and how being accepted to the program will benefit the goals and aspirations, Your reasons for seeking this degree, Any research interests, Past and present employment within education or related fields, and Future professional plans.
  • Resume/curriculum vitae 
  • A Completed Ed.D. Admission Standards Form (within the online application)

  • Three professional references with name, institution or company, position and email address 
  • Interview (as scheduled with the admission committee)

Applications are due by October 1st for Spring semester enrollment and March 1st for Fall semester enrollment.

Course Requirements


The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership requires a minimum of 90 post-baccalaureate, graduate credit hours. With the approval of the supervisory committee, up to 30 graduate hours earned as part of the master’s degree may be used to satisfy the degree requirements. All courses are three credit hours unless otherwise noted.

KSU/WU Collaborative Program Requirements (94 credit hours)


Students with a masters degree may transfer up to 30 hrs as approved by the supervisory committee.

  • EA 597 - School Planning and Facilities Credits: 3

Notes


Preliminary Exam: The dissertation proposal is the preliminary exam.  The written portion is the first three chapters of the dissertation, and the oral defense is conducted at the proposal meeting with the supervisory committee. 

Dissertation Requirements: After successfully completing the comprehensive exam, students must enroll in 1 credit hours of dissertation per semester, excluding summer semester, until the dissertation is complete. After minimum number of doctoral research hours listed on program of study are completed, a student must enroll in 1 hour per semester, excluding summer semester, until the dissertation is completed.
