Microbiology B.A./B.S.

The Microbiology curriculum coupled with appropriate electives provides an excellent education base for students moving directly into the job market, for students headed toward medical, dental, medical technology, and veterinary programs, and for students going into graduate programs in the biological sciences. Students can choose from General or Medical Microbiology options and they can choose electives in prokaryotic microbiology, eukaryotic microbiology, biotechnology/genetic engineering, and infectious diseases.

Students in microbiology may obtain either the BA or BS degree. The requirements for a microbiology major, in addition to those requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences, are listed below:

1Upon consultation with a Division of Biology advisor a student may substitute:

  • BIOCH 755 - Biochemistry I and BIOCH 765 - Biochemistry II for BIOCH 521 General Biochemistry

2Upon consultation with a Division of Biology advisor a student may substitute:

  • CHM 531 - Organic Chemistry I and CHM 550 - Organic Chemistry II for CHM 350 General Organic Chemistry
  • CHM 532 - Organic Chemistry Laboratory for CHM 351 General Organic Chemistry Laboratory

3Prerequisites for MATH 220 are MATH 100 - College Algebra and MATH 150 - Plane Trigonometry or four semesters of high school algebra and one semester of trigonometry plus appropriate math placement exam scores.

4Upon consultation with a Division of Biology advisor a student may substitute:

  • PHYS 213 - Engineering Physics I and PHYS 214 - Engineering Physics II for PHYS 113 General Physics I and PHYS 114 General Physics II.

5Classes required under each option total 20 credits. For each option, classes applied to the specific option requirements and those chosen from the major elective list must be different classes.
