Music Education (B.M.E.)

The program of study leading to this degree is a nine-semester curriculum designed to prepare music teachers for grades pre K–12. With careful planning and enrollment during summer session(s) all requirements may be completed in four years. Within this curriculum there are two emphases–vocal/choral music, and instrumental music.

Applied lessons each semester except the professional semester


Note:


Students must register for a minimum of 2 credits of 255/455 each semester except the professional semester.

A half recital or an extended “jury” recital is required before graduation.  Divisional recommendation determines the methods of satisfying this requirement. 

Piano proficiency requirements must be met one semester before scheduling student teaching.

Additional music requirements for instrumental emphasis


Instrumental majors (Winds and percussion only) are required to participate in marching band for at least two semesters (preferably during the freshman and sophomore years. String Majors are required to enroll in String Techniques and Materials (MUSIC 234) regardless of primary instrument.  In these specific semesters of dual enrollment, IM will take Marching Band or MUSIC 234 for 1 credit while enrolling in their other required ensemble for 0 credit.

Participation for Credit in a Music Ensemble


Participation for credit in a music ensemble (instrumental or choral, depending on the major performance area) is required each semester that a student is enrolled as a Music Education (B.M.E.) major (minimum 7 credit hours), except the professional semester.  Ensemble requirements may be partially fulfilled by enrolling in jazz ensembles for no more than 2 semesters (2 credit hours).
