Overview

The department of Applied Human Sciences is a multidisciplinary unit that provides graduate training for M.S. and Ph.D. students. The professional specializations are addressed to broad issues concerning individuals and families, and the courses are taught by a faculty of educators, health specialists and gerontologists, marriage and family therapists, psychologist, speech language pathologists and audiologists.

Extensive research and professional practice opportunities are provided through multiple centers. The Family Center, Stone House Early Childhood Education Center; Speech and Hearing Center and Riley-Geary Counties Domestic Mediation Services. Opportunities are also available through the university-wide Center on Aging.

The department offers graduate work toward M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in a broad range of the human sciences and human services. The M.S. degree in family studies and human services includes specializations in applied family science, communication sciences and disorders, couple and family therapy, early childhood education, life span human development, and youth development. The department offers the following specializations leading to the Ph.D. degree in human ecology: applied family science, couples and family therapy and life span human development.

Distance education and certificate programs

The department collaborates with the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (GPIDEA) to offer the M.S. degree in family studies and human services in the following specializations: family and community services, and youth development. The inter-institutional M.S. programs draw upon the expertise of graduate faculty from nine universities. The programs are taught fully on-line. Students enrolled in the program through Kansas State University will receive their degrees from Kansas State University. Also available through the GPIDEA is a certificate in youth development.
