POLSC 160 - The Origins and Evolution of American Democracy

Examines the philosophical foundations, constitutional design, institutional development, and civic practices of American democracy. Students will explore the theoretical ideas that informed the founding of the United States, the debates surrounding constitutional creation and interpretation, the evolution of political institutions and rights, and the opportunities and obligations of citizenship in a democratic republic. Emphasis is placed on close engagement with primary texts, critical analysis of constitutional principles, and application of democratic ideals to contemporary political and social issues.
