ART 648 - Art of Japan

Credits: 3

A survey of the traditional arts of Japan – ceramics, metalworking, sculpture, painting, printmaking, garden design, textiles – from the prehistoric period to 1868, the beginning of the Meiji period and the modernization of Japan. Topics include art in the contexts of Shinto and Buddhism, samurai weaponry, the tea ceremony, and the ukiyo-e printmaking tradition.
