PHILO 138 - Ethics and Social Media Credits: 3
Introduces ethical theories, concepts and methods, e.g. utility, rights and perfect obligations in deontic and consequentialist theories, and applies them to ethical issues in social media, e.g. privacy, bullying, hate speech, doxing, bots and preferences in dating apps. Students learn to evaluate and apply competing ethical systems, and to defend the resulting analysis in written form.
Note Rationale: The 2030 plan for KSU highlights the need to increase recruiting efforts, train students in ways relevant to their future careers and post-university lives, while maintaining credible academic standards. The Philosophy Department has been offering 100 level courses in ethics (e.g., Introduction to Moral Philosophy) as part of the general education requirement for students in A&S. This proposal has several aims: 1) to create a course in the ethics of social media developing the analytic skills common to philosophical courses in ethics while applying those skills to issues of social importance and interest to students, which course should be 2) available to on-campus students, 3) appropriate for offerings through Global Campus, and 4) made accessible in the near term to high school students in addition to all KSU students.
