Examines the relationship between the modern nation-state and powerful non-state institutions and social forces.  Introduces prominent theories on the rise of the nation-state and its global transmission as the dominant form of governance.  Addresses the role of social capital, social movements, NGOs, religious organizations, and educational institutions in upholding or challenging nation-state legitimacy.
