Horticulture and Natural Resources (M.S.)

Location(s): Manhattan Campus, Manhattan Online



The Horticulture and Natural Resources graduate program offers a Master of Science degree program in diverse interdiciplinary horticultural areas and in Natural Resources disciplines related to Park Management and Conservation and Wildlife and Outdoor Enterprise Management. Graduate students are expected to excel in research, teaching, extension activities and develop professionally. Independent and original research is an important part of the graduate program and forms a basis for a graduate thesis. Research can be conducted within the department or in other cooperating departments.

Admission Requirements


  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year institution according to the following guidelines:
    • Horticulture: a bachelor’s degree in horticulture, botany, biology or related agricultural science.
    • Park Management and Conservation: a bachelor’s degree in the life sciences or natural resources is preferred but not required.
    • Wildlife and Outdoor Enterprise Management: a bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, ecology, or related field.
  • GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale, based on the courses taken during the last two academic years.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required.

Course Requirements


The M.S. requires at least 30 credit hours beyond the bachelor’s degree. Master’s students should earn a significant majority of their credit hours in courses numbered 700 or above. Therefore, of the 30 credit hours normally required for the master’s program of study at least 18 hours should be at the 700 level and above, including the thesis/research and the report/problems hours required by the thesis and report options. Course and research credit requirements are as follows:

  • Credits: 1 (2) †
  • Research Methods and/or Scientific Writing Credits: 3
  • Statistics courses at 700-level or above Credits: 3
  • Other courses to be selected with major advisor and committee
  • Research

  • HORT 899 - Research-MS  Credits: 6-8 (Thesis option)
  • or

  • HORT 898 - Master’s Report  Credits: 2 (Report option)
