The programs in the Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health focus on nutrition and physical activity, dietetics, chronic disease prevention and management, athletic training, functional foods and diet supplements, sensory analysis and public health nutrition.

The Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health offers the following five bachelor of science programs: Athletic Training, Dietetics, Nutrition and Health (pre-health), Nutrition and Kinesiology (dual degree), and Nutritional Sciences (pre-med). Our department, also, offers online BS completion programs in Dietetics and Nutrition and Health. Many students prefer our programs to prepare them for entry in Medical, Physical Therapy, Physician’s Assistant, Dental, Nursing, and other health professional schools.

A dual-degree program in nutrition and kinesiology is offered jointly with the Department of Kinesiology. Students earn a BS in human nutrition and a BS in kinesiology. This is one of the largest programs of its kind in the nation.

Students who want to become registered dietitians must take additional courses to meet the academic requirements of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics – didactic program in dietetics, DPD; or, coordinated program in dietetics, CPD. They will then become eligible to apply for an accredited internship. Interested students should contact the Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health. Students in our accredited programs will have opportunities for practicums, internships and shadowing at various healthcare facilities, food service companies, and/or human performance sites while pursuing their degree.

We offer concurrent BS/MS and BS/MPH options that allows students to more efficiently obtain their graduate degree. The combined BS/MS program allows exceptional undergraduate students in the Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health the opportunity to obtain both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in shorter time than typically required to earn a BS plus a MS if both degrees are pursued separately. Students can obtain the MS with a thesis, report, or coursework-only option. New in 2016, the concurrent BS/MS program is available to distance students through Global Campus. This allows our undergraduate distance students in to pursue their graduate degree with us.

We have specialized laboratories for studying sensory analysis at Ice Hall and the Olathe campus; and nutrition research in Justin Hall and the Physical Activity and Nutrition Clinical Research Consortium are available for research and instruction. We, also, have faculty who supervise students in food systems management at Kramer and Derby Dining Centers. Our Athletic Training faculty conduct research in Justin Hall and in the Sunset Avenue health center building. Our faculty regularly schedule study tours to Asia, Central American, South America, and Europe. Furthermore, there are numerous undergraduate research opportunities in our Kansas State University facilities and various national and international regions our faculty visit.
