A course of study leading to a degree from the College of Engineering provides a well-rounded university education and equips students with a broad theoretical and practical background to meet the new and demanding problems of our technological society.

The College of Engineering offers the Bachelor of Science degrees in the following fields: architectural engineering, biological systems engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, computer science, construction science and management, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, and mechanical engineering.

The College of Engineering at K-State is the largest College of Engineering in Kansas. In addition to the 11 degree programs, 8 formal options and 59 areas of specialization are offered. All established Bachelor of Science engineering degree programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org. The Biomedical Engineering program is currently undergoing the process to become ABET accredited. Construction science and management is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education, www.acce-hq.org.  The Bachelor of Science computer science degree is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org.

Admission

New student admissions

Applicants must first be admitted to Kansas State University either as an incoming freshman or a transfer student. Admission to the College of Engineering is selective. Declaration of the desired curriculum in the College of Engineering does not guarantee admission into the degree program selected. Individuals who have completed admission applications submitted to Kansas State University by February 1 will be considered for priority admission.

After admission to K-State, applicants will be evaluated for admission by the College of Engineering based on cumulative high school grade point average and composite ACT or SAT scores. Applicants will be notified by the College of Engineering about their admission status.  Academic standards to be considered for early admission to the College of Engineering:

  • 3.0 high school GPA
  • Cumulative ACT score of 21 or cumulative SAT score of 1060

Students not admitted to the College of Engineering can enter the university Open Option program or another available college/degree program. These students can still apply to enter the College of Engineering at a later date after they have completed one full-time semester at K-State as an internal transfer student.

Transfer student admission

After admission to K-State, applicants will be evaluated for admission by the College of Engineering based on cumulative college or university grade point average and college courses taken. Applicants will be notified by the College of Engineering about their admission status. Transfer applicants will also be considered for spring semester admission if applications are submitted to Kansas State University by the priority deadline of November 1.  Minimum academic standards to be considered for admission to the College of Engineering:

  • 2.75 GPA on all transfer college level coursework

Academic standards to be considered for priority admission to the College of Engineering:

  • Eligible to enroll in or completed the first calculus course in the math sequence for a specific degree program.

Applicants with previous college credit, earned after graduation from high school, must apply as transfer students. All applicants to the college with 12 combined or more transfer hours, must have a 2.75 cumulative GPA or higher.

Internal transfer student admission

Applicants will be evaluated for admission by the College of Engineering based on cumulative K-State grade point average and courses taken. Applicants will be notified by the College of Engineering about their admission status.

General Information

Engineering fees

Students enrolling in engineering courses are assessed additional fees per credit hour. Information regarding current fees can be found on the Admissions website: www.k-state.edu/admissions/finaid/.

Grade requirements

In addition to the university standards and policies for grades, the College of Engineering has the following standards:

Curricula grades

See the individual engineering department sections of this catalog for the grade requirements for their curriculum and degree. All courses applied to degree requirements require a letter grade except for 0-credit hour assembly courses.

Transferability of courses

Many of the fundamental courses required for a degree in engineering may be obtained through pre-engineering programs at other four-year institutions or at community colleges. However, there are differences among the curricula; students electing this route should work closely with their pre-engineering advisors. The Cr and D grades are not acceptable for transfer into College of Engineering programs.

To determine which courses at a particular college or university will substitute for courses at K-State, access the Office of Admissions web page.

Professional experience

Professional experiences include cooperative (co-op) educational programs, industrial internships, and summer employment in an engineering/industrial/professional setting. Industrial internships and summer employment opportunities expectations of the employer. Many students will complete from one to three summer professional internships during their time at Kansas State University, and these may be with different companies. Students are paid very well and come back with industry experience which adds to their overall skill set, experience base and growth in the profession. Engineering co-op experiences provide students with a longer work assignment with a company, usually over a 6 month period, and are away from campus for a fall or spring semester. More information on these options as well as other career support can be found on the K-State Career Center website at http://www.k-state.edu/careercenter/.
